Rice Krispie treats are one of those treats that always reminds me of childhood. I remember going to family holiday parties and eating them non-stop (and maybe occasionally sneaking an extra few to take home). What can I say, there is just something SO good about the chewy, gooey marshmallowy goodness of a Rice Krispie treat.
One of my favorite things about making these treats is how kid-friendly they are to make and eat! My kids LOVE being able to help out in the kitchen and insist on being involved with each and every step. Cookies that require a ton of ingredients and too many steps can just be a bit too cumbersome when kids are involved so this is a huge win in this moms book. With these, they can help with nearly every step without too much worry and they are a relatively quick treat to make.
To make you simply follow the directions on the box for the classic Rice Krispie Treat recipe with the addition of adding in a few drops of green food coloring once the marshmallow has completely melted. I find that the color tends to look lighter once you mix in the cereal so add a few extra drops for a more vibrant color. Once the color is mixed in well, add cereal and mix until thoroughly coated. Transfer the mixture to a well mixed pan and press in! Cut into triangles and you’re ready to decorate!
My kids had so much joy helping to decorate them and loved being able to be so hands on to help make them. We set each kid up with their own cookie sheet to create their own trees, set out another tray with lots of frosting and icing options, sprinkles and everything needed to create colorful, fun and delicious Rice Krispie Christmas tree treats!
Making a batch of these are perfect for adding to your cookie tray and would be a great classroom treat (once all this COVID mess is over with, of course).
Couple Tips For Making Rice Krispie Christmas Tree Treats:
Coloring the tree
When adding food coloring to create the green Rice Krispie Treats, add an extra drop of food coloring or two for extra vibrance. If you don’t like using food coloring, you can totally skip adding the food coloring to the mix too!
Oil the pan that you’ll be pressing the Rice Krispies into very well so that you can easily remove them. I used a casserole pan for pressing my treats into but you could also use a deeper cookie or sheet pan.
Easy Peasy Pressing
Rice Krispies Treats can be super sticky, especially when you are trying to push them into the pan. My secret to easy peasy non-stick pressing? Oil your hands and use them to press down the treats. With a little oil on your hands nothing sticks to them at all and you can push the marshmallowly treats into the pan well.
Adding The Tree Base
I find that it’s easier to add the base soon after the treats have cooled and cut. If you wait too long the treats get a bit more solid and it makes it harder to add the pretzel tree base. If you can’t do it right away, you can turn your stove onto the warm function and pop the cut treats into the oven a few minutes to slightly warm them to make it easier (make sure that they’re all spread apart). Sprinkles stick best to a warmer treat too (of you’re not using icing or frosting).
In large saucepan melt butter over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Add food coloring and stir until mixed well. Remove from heat.
Add Rice Krispies cereal. Stir until well coated.
Using a buttered spatula, evenly press mixture into 13×9 inch pan or deep cookie sheet that’s been coated in cooking spray.
Add pretzel stick to bottom of triangle for tree base. Decorate with sprinkles and icing.
