Tackling the Task of Learning to Read with Reading Eggs

This post is sponsored by Reading Eggs, however, all opinions are our own.

Some of us have been dreaming of homeschooling our babies for as long as we can remember, some of us fell into it as a great option, and some of us didn’t really have a choice. Whatever the case is, you are going to need an arsenal learning tool to help you out along the way! We highly recommend that Reading Eggs be one of these tools.

What is Reading Eggs?

Reading Eggs is an online learning resource with reading games and activities that encourage your child to learn at their own pace and to have fun while doing it. In fact, our daughter was having so much fun that I don’t think she had any idea the games she was playing had anything to do with learning. This probably has something to do with the fact that it was created by educators with over 30 years of experience. This also means you can have confidence in their programs to teach your child!

Virtual Learning ToolVirtual Learning Tool

There are brackets for each age; 2-4, 3-7, and 7-13. This makes it easy to use Reading Eggs as part of your everyday routine to help your child prepare for structured school lessons or make it part of your homeschool lessons.

Why does it work?

Reading Eggs uses “5 essential keys” to help your child learn to read. This helps the lessons to be well rounded and motivating for your child.

Here’s there keys to learning;

  1. The lessons are colorful and fun.
  2. They are interactive, keeping your child engaged & on task.
  3. Your child will take a placement quiz before starting each program ensuring they are working at the correct level.
  4. Parents have access to both progress reports and supplemental activity sheets.
  5. They have over 2500 online books offering your little one plenty of variety.

Try out Reading Eggs today!

If you are on the fence about whether or not Reading Eggs will work for your child, you’re in luck. They are offering a no-obligation free trial so you can try it out before you buy. Within the 30 day trial, we were able to see huge improvements in our daughter’s confidence with reading and I can bet you will see the same in yours.

When your trial is over, you have a couple of options:

  • $59 for 12 months of all access

Here’s What You [Actually] Need for Baby Proofing!

Here’s What You [Actually] Need for Baby Proofing!

Your baby has reached the milestone of scooting and crawling, and it happened in what seems like the blink of an eye. It’s time to start baby-proofing and quick! But what/where/how? We’ve got this quick and easy guide to get you started on the basics of baby-proofing!

Baby Proofing Essentials Checklist

baby proofing

baby proofing

Below you will find a list of items that will make it simple and easy to baby proof your home. However, you must keep in mind that no matter how well you baby-proof, you must always keep a watchful eye to ensure your little one is safe!

Rule #1, you need to create safe spaces within your house and you do this by putting up baby gates that keep your little one confined to where you want them. If you have stairs or rooms that you’d like to keep off-limits, a baby gate (or 2 or 3) is a must.

If you have stairs, the last thing you want is your baby crawling up them only to tumble down. You will need to teach them how to get up and down the stairs, but this should be done under close watch. Any other time, the gate should be closed to prevent accidents. Keep in mind, you’ll want a gate at the top AND the bottom of your stairs.

Here are some gates we recommend:

Gates can be hard to shop for. You really need to pay attention to the width of your opening, whether you want one you can walk through, and how important aesthetics are to you. Some gates are pressure mounted, and some are screwed into the wall. You will have to consider your door frame or banisters (if any) when deciding on the gate to buy. We highly recommend getting one that is adjustable in width and has a walkthrough option.

A well priced easy to mount option is the Regalo Easy Step Walk Thru Gate (also available in an extra-wide option).

If home decor is your thing, and you want something stylish, you may consider a wooden gate-like The Evenflo Barn Door Walk-Thru Gate (Farmhouse Collection). You’ll pay a little bit more, but it’s something that you have to live with for months, even years, so it’s important that you can live with the look of it.

Banister Guard

While we’re on the topic of stairs, here is another thing you need to consider! If you have a two-story home with a banister that is open to below, you’ll want to make sure you have a banister guard.

Our Top Pick: Rolling Cove Bannister Safety Net

Cupboard Safety Latches

Alright, this one is for both your sanity and your baby’s safety. Bathroom and kitchen cabinets are an absurdly enticing sight to crawling and walking babies. You’ll want to make sure any cabinets that have poisonous cleaners, breakables, or anything else hazardous all have safety latches on them.

Better yet, if possible, move everything questionable that is in a lower cabinet/drawer/shelf to higher ground.

An Easy to Install Recommendation: CUTESAFETY Cabinet Locks

*Rookie Mom Tip: Twist a hair tie into an infinity shape and place it over the cabinet for a makeshift cabinet lock. While you should use the real thing for hazardous materials, this hack will work for the Tupperware cabinet that your 1 year old just can’t resist throwing everything out of.

Oven, Closets, Refrigerator, Garbage Can + Toilet Latches

Securing the oven door is self-explanatory, but If you have sliding doors on your closets, you will want to think about latching these as well. The same goes for the fridge and garbage cans. There is nothing worse than a tipped and spilled garbage can with a baby in the middle of it. These latches work great on the toilet lid too!

The Latch That Works for Pretty Much Everything: Child Safety Strap Locks

Range Knob Covers for the Stove

While you’re in the kitchen, go ahead and cover those knobs on the range too! You definitely want to keep your stove knobs off-limits for many years to come.

An Option That Fits on Most Stoves: Safety First Knob Covers

Door Pinch Guards

Door Pinch Guards are a lifesaver! They will help to prevent slamming and smashing little hands. Also, they help prevent babies from shutting and locking the door from the inside. They can easily be moved off and hung around the doorknob when you don’t want to use them.

Product Recommendation: Wittle Finger Pinch Guards

If you have a coffee table, TV console, hearth… basically any furniture with corners, you will want to grab some of these to protect your baby in case of tumbling. We kept ours on our coffee table through the toddler years, just in case.

Here’s What We Used: Roving Cove Baby Proofing Edge Corner Protector

Properly Securing Furniture

If your baby is crawling, then climbing is not far behind. You’ll want to make sure any furniture that could tip over is secured to the wall. This includes dressers, TV stands, bookshelves, and more.

Here are the Ones We Used: Furniture Anchors

If your TV sits on top of a console, you are going to want to have it mounted down.

Here’s an easy to install option: The Baby Lodge TV and Furniture Anti-Tip Straps

Many newer homes now come with tamper-resistant outlets (thank gosh!). However, if this is not the case for your home, you’ll want to get outlet covers and lots of them! Tiny fingers like to stick things right in those outlet holes, which is extremely dangerous.

A Popular & Well-Trusted Option: Safety First Plug Protectors

Curtains and Blinds

Babies love to pull themselves up on curtains, so if you have any that are floor-length, consider removing them or pulling them up somehow. You will want to do the same for blinds that have long cords so that they don’t get wound around your baby’s neck.

Product Recommendation: Dreambaby Blind Cord Wraps

Baby Proofing Reminders You Need to Know

Along with baby-proofing your house with the items above, keep the following reminders in mind.

baby proofingbaby proofing

1. Turn Down the Hot Water Heater

A hot water burn can happen in just 2 seconds. This is easily preventable by setting your hot water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Pick a Safe Spot for all Cleaning Supplies

If you have an upper cabinet space available, put all cleaning supplies up and locked away. This also goes for medicine and alcohol.

3. Take into Consideration the Specifics of Your Home

tips for new parents with pets

tips for new parents with pets

Every home is different, so it will be important that you take a close look at your home for potential hazards like cords, floor lamps, etc. If you have a floor heater or radiator you’ll want to block access to this. The same goes for your fireplace.

Also, if you have animals, be aware of their food placement on the floor. Crawling babies love to play with and taste kibble. The kitchen opening might be another necessary spot for a gate.

4. Check Things Out from Their Level

Now, this might sound silly, but try getting down on your baby’s level and crawling around. Look around at the things that are at their level. Taking an inventory from this perspective will help you to see anything we have missed on this list.

5. Unplug Electronics and Cords

Many accidents can happen if phone cords and laptop chargers are plugged in, so it is best to unplug them when they are not in use. Also, make sure all cords are at least 3 feet away from your baby’s crib, including the monitor.

6. Lower the Crib Mattress

A crawling baby means it’s time to lower that crib mattress to the lowest setting. Follow the instructions for your specific crib.

baby proofing

baby proofing

7. Test Small Items Using the Paper Towel Roll Trick

Crawling babies are also teething babies, and they are at the stage of development where they put EVERYTHING in their mouths. Choking hazards become a real concern. But how do you know if something is a choking hazard or not? If you aren’t sure, use a paper towel roll. If an object fits inside of it, then it’s a choking hazard.

8. Think About Pool Safety

This is a bigger purchase and an important one! Contact a local and trusted pool builder to help with installing a secure gate around your pool to prevent drowning accidents. Also, be sure to check out our article on pool safety here

If you feel overwhelmed, there are baby-proofing experts in most major cities who will come to your home and help. You can check yelp, homeadvisor.com, or chat with other moms in your neighborhood for recommendations. Don’t worry, you got this mama!

While this is by no means an exhaustive list, it will hopefully get you started. Since every baby and home is different, spend some time observing and you will be able to see exactly what the specific needs are for your family. Enjoy this stage of your baby’s life!

The Best Portable Blender Period!- Vejo Review

The Best Portable Blender Period!- Vejo Review

If you are like me you desperately want to eat a healthy balanced diet. However, the million errands I have to do in a day as a mom (ok I might be exaggerating a bit) often finds me in the middle of a fast-food drive-thru or eating some not so tasty bar. Recently, I got to try out the new Vejo portable blender, and I am going to be perfectly honest it blew me away. Not only is this machine the best portable blender (I have tried several) it is a complete game-changer for my diet.

Vejo Portable BlenderVejo Portable Blender

How is Vejo Different From every other Portable Blender?

My biggest struggle with other portable blenders is they still aren’t that convenient. They might be smaller, than traditional blenders and might operate on battery power. But you still have to pile in all the ingredients into the blender before you leave home, or have somewhere to store all the ingredients.

Vejo blender is simply the easiest to use smoothie makers around.

I think the easiest way to describe Vejo is like a portable Keurig, but instead of pods filled with coffee, you have pods (or as Vejo calls them “blends”) filled with delicious healthy fruits, greens, and vitamins to make amazing smoothies. And don’t worry Vejo’s blends are 100% biodegradable so you won’t be harming the planet. Here is how Vejo works.

How Vejo Works

Vejo Review – How to Use Vejo Portable Blender

You aren’t going to find a simpler process. You have to do an initial charge of the blender when it first arrives, then you are ready to go.

Step 1. Fill Vejo Blender with Water (Cold or Hot), or your choice of Milk – Each Vejo blend tells you what is recommended to mix your drink with.

Step 2. Peel the Top of your blend and Place in Blender

Step 3. Lock in Top and the Blending Begins

30 seconds later you have an incredibly delicious smoothie. It honestly can’t be any easier and could not be tastier. It is perfect for so many occasions like when you are taking the kids to practice, don’t have time to make breakfast, a great snack at work. Also, I recently took it on a trip and it was a lifesaver. So many times eating out hurts my stomach and with Vejo, I had an incredible smoothie in a snap.

My tip is to have a couple of blends with you if you know you are going to be out and about for a while. That way you always have a delicious healthy snack nearby when needed.

Vejo Blends

Vejo BlendsVejo Blends

Vejo has a wide variety of blends for all different types of blends that can fit into pretty much any diet regimen. All the ingredients are organic and freeze-dried within hours of being picked. I also love that all the blends have no sugar added.

Use the promo code ROOKIEMOMS8PACK for a free 8 pack of blends with the purchase of a Vejo Starter Kit!!

(Both the Starter Kit and the 8-pack of choice must be added to the cart before adding their code)

Daily Vejo Blends

The Daily Vejo Blends are your classic greens and fruit smoothie blends. These are the ones I find myself most often enjoying as a part of my regular routine. These blends are all between 40 – 100 calories which is great because it’s so delicious without any of the guilt. My personal favorites are the tart berry, clean greens, and matcha latte.

Here are some of the other daily Vejo blends you should try:

  • Strawberry Banana
  • Pina Strawberry
  • Tropical
  • Mixed Berry
  • Pina Greens

Protein Vejo Blends

If you need a little more protein in your diet, the protein Vejo blends are a great option. I find my teenage son often is making these blends happen. The blends run between 6g and 9g of protein and typically are about 100 calories. My personal favorites are banana almond and spiced chocolate.

Functional Vejo Blends

I am a huge fan of functional food to help with things like sleep and energy. Vejo has a wide variety of options including a new Watermelon Fresca with a collagen glow.

Performance (Workout) Blends

If you need a quick pickup before your workout or a recovery drink you can pop your Vejo in your gym bag and head out the door. They have a pre-workout option and recovery blends. The pre work out blend should be taken about 30-60 minutes before your exercise and is great to get your blood flowing. The post-workout blend helps repair the your cells after a tough workout and is only 30 calories, so you are not immediately consuming all the calories you just burned off.

Why I absolutely Love Vejo

Best Portable Blender - Vejo ReviewBest Portable Blender - Vejo Review

Convenience & Taste

Honestly, I don’t have the time nor the patience to create delicious healthy smoothies. As a mom with 5 kids and a business to run, there is always someone who needs my attention or time. Having an easy on the go smoothie maker is not something I ever imagined, and it’s pretty incredible. I have tried the smoothie delivery boxes and the meal prepping, there is nothing that beats the convenience of Vejo, plus the taste is absolutely delicious.

I am a big proponent of eating organic and I love that Vejo’s blends are all organic. In addition, most smoothies when you visit a local smoothie shop, or even if you make it on your own are around 250 -400 calories. With Vejo, most smoothies range between 50 – 100 calories, and those calories are packed with nutrients.

Vejo Review - Best Portable BlenderVejo Review - Best Portable Blender

I have tried a few other smoothie services, and typically they cost about $5.00 – $6.00 a smoothie. Plus, if you visit your local smoothie shop, especially one serving with organic ingredients, I find myself paying $6-$9 a smoothie. Vejo’s smoothies average around $3.00. Since they are freeze-dried, they last quite a while so you don’t have to worry about waste.

I can honestly say, that there are very few products that have blown me away but this is definitely one. Because when you have a busy Mom Schedule it is so hard to find health and convenience. Vejo checks off both boxes. or  Check out all of Vejo’s Blender options and blends at Vejo.com!

If your girl likes playing with dolls, how about getting her a few DC superheroines to play with? These action figures come with assorted accessories and introduce the best toys for 5 year old girls to some powerful images of women.

Creative Toys & Arts and Crafts

Creative and crafty toys are excellent for building cognitive ability and developing creativity – as well as tearing your daughter away from the iPad for a change. These toy options for 5-year-old girls are fun and engaging for any child, but most especially those with a creative bent.

Crayola Inspiration Art Case

It’s a great indoor activity for the cooler seasons or rainy days, and multiple kids can easily use it at the same time. If you have a budding artist on your hands, this is definitely one of the best toys for 5-year-old girls.

This kit is designed to spark creativity outside the realm of traditional rock painting by including not just paint, but stickers, gems, glitter glue and googly eyes. Your girl will truly be able to make some fun creations! The kit also comes with ten rocks, although you could certainly source additional rocks on your own to create even more.

Paint brushes and sponges are also included, along with an instruction manual for creating some of the examples on the box. Of course, with a kit like this, your little girl can also create whatever her growing mind can imagine.

Quick Knit Loom Kit for Beginners

Crafts like knitting have made a huge comeback in recent years, and this is a great kit for a young girl to begin with, especially if she’s the naturally creative type. The provided loom allows your child to create rainbow accessories, including a pom-pom hat and cup cozy.

Since it’s also an open-ended creative endeavor, she can design her own projects, too, with 90 yards of chunky rainbow yarn. Using a loom involves repetitive wrapping and hooking, making it helpful for fine motor coordination, math, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, too.

Outdoor Toys for 5-Year-Old Girls

Kids thrive when they get outside in the fresh air and sunshine, with freedom to run, jump, play and develop new physical skills. These toys encourage outdoor activity and they make it fun, too! Studies show that kids burn more calories when playing outdoors, and it also helps to strengthen their bones and muscles, making these some of the best toys for 5-year-old girls.

Outdoor Explorer Kit and Bug Catcher Kit

Some girls just love the creepy crawlies! This kit has everything a curious, outdoorsy kid could want! The set includes a compass, binoculars, a flashlight, a butterfly net and critter case, tweezers, a hat and an explorer’s backpack. It would be great for camping trips or just nature walks in your own backyard, and it actually lets kids catch bugs to examine without even touching them – a major plus for some kiddos! The kit can be used over and over again for countless outdoor explorations. So, it grows with your little girl, too.

Find and Seek Scavenger Hunt Card Game

Since this is a card game, it can be transported nearly anywhere for hours of outdoor exploration and fun, and it’s a great family activity, too. The game includes 35 cards with both words and pictures on them, so even non-readers can easily play.

Kids draw a card and then run off to find something to match it. It’s a great way for your girl to discover more about nature, while having lots of fun – and getting some exercise and fresh air – in the process.

Battery Powered Kid’s Motorcycle

This is one of the pricier toys on our list, but it may just be the coolest ride in town, too! It’s made to look like a motorcycle. The bike has the same balance base and ride feel as a motorized tricycle, making it safe and comfortable for your little girl.

Powered by a rechargeable battery, but it also requires separate AA batteries for all of the cool light-up features. It doesn’t go faster than three miles per hour, and a full charge will last 1-2 hours. If your girl truly wants to ride in style, this motorcycle can also play music by connecting an MP3 AUX port, a USB or a TF card.

Educational Toys and Games for 5-Year-Old Girls

Some kids love to learn, while others need a bit of prodding at times! These educational toys and games make learning fun, and you’ll see your girl coming back to them time and again.

Brain Quest Kindergarten

This is probably the time in your special little girl’s life when she has just gone to Kindergarten, or she’s preparing to go soon. These cards are an excellent learning tool, and they’re illustrated to keep your child interested. It is great for reinforcing learning from the classroom, or for getting a head-start. Kids are inquisitive by nature and quiz games are bound to keep them involved, so we recommend giving this one a try.

Zingo! Sight Words Game

This is a best-seller board game on Amazon for a reason! It was a Toy of the Year finalist in 2013 and is said to be the very best at helping kids from Kindergarten to second grade learn sight words.

This toy is equally fun for pre-readers and new/early readers, and it’s been described as a “stealth learning experience” because kids don’t even realize how much knowledge and skill they’re gaining while they play. Exactly what you want in an educational toy, right?

Bunchems Bunch’n Build Activity Kit

Bunchems let kids shape and create dozens of animals, shapes and other creations. They come with shapers included, and these are absolutely wonderful for imaginative play. The kit includes an inspiration guide to get you started, but your girl can make anything she wants with these unique toys and they can be used over and over again. Flash Cards Basic Picture Words

Available on Amazon.

OK, these are a little less toy and a bit more learning tool, but Flash Cards combine learning with quality time with parents and other trusted adults, making them something young children will enjoy. Kids are naturally drawn to activities where an adult is actively participating, especially a parent or guardian. Also, 5 year old girls are in the early phases of developing their social skills and their attention span is increasing, and flash cards offer an early way of both bonding and helping your child learn to recognize common sight words so she can begin learning to read.

Puzzles for 5-Year-Old Girls

Many girls find puzzles fun but, more importantly, they’re a sneaky way to teach your child to overcome challenges and frustration in order to practice her problem solving. Puzzles give kids higher self-esteem and a sense of pride, and they assist in the development of emotional, cognitive and physical skills all at the same time, making them great gift ideas for a 5-year-old girl.

Play Panda Magnetic Puzzles

Available on Amazon.

These aren’t your normal puzzles! We all know how kids just love playing with the magnets on the refrigerator, which makes this magnetic puzzle tons of fun for a 5-year-old. The puzzle set comes with a design book that challenges your child to replicate various pictures. If you have a girl who likes puzzles, this is an excellent gift for her.

HABA Animal Upon Animal Game

Available on Amazon.

Strictly speaking, this is a game and not a puzzle, but it utilizes the same skill set your girl needs for traditional puzzles – just in a more creative way. It’s like taking traditional building blocks and kicking them up a notch. More complicated puzzles and building with smaller toys are appealing to 5-year-olds, and child psychologists say that puzzles help develop problem-solving skills and increase attention span and focus on a task. Games like these aid in the mental development of the transitional periods in a child’s life. This game is the right amount of challenging and endearing to keep a young girl’s attention.

60-Piece Wooden Puzzle Pack

Available on Amazon.

At five years old, 60-piece puzzles are a bit challenging for most kids, but without causing too much undue frustration. This puzzle pack comes with four separate wooden puzzles, classic jigsaw in design and made from durable and safe wood. These puzzles are brain-boosting, stimulating and can be assembled over and over again by your little puzzler.

Books for 5-Year-Old Girls

Books teach us, allow us to escape to new worlds and better develop our own language habits. Even if your girl isn’t reading on her own yet, reading books aloud to children stimulates their developing brains and their imaginations, while also expanding their understanding of the world. Below are just a few of our personal favorites.

Available on Amazon.

If you have a tiny rebel in your home who just doesn’t fit into the “little pink box” that we make for our girls, you must get this book set! It contains wonderful stories of hundreds of extraordinary and influential women, giving young girls so much more to aspire to than fairytale princesses. It inspires girls to set lofty goals for themselves, reminds them that courage and hard work are the best ways to achieve them, and instills in girls that they can truly be whatever they want to be.

Adventure Girls: Crafts and Activities for Curious, Creative, Courageous Girls

Available on Amazon.

While this one isn’t a story book, it’s an awesome reminder for your girl that she was built for adventure, and for learning and creating. It’s packed with projects and activities that encourage independence and inspire imagination, such as stargazing, animal tracking and building a shadow theatre. It would be a great gift for an adventure-seeking girl, or for one who is working on coming out of her shell and developing her confidence.

At age five year old, girls are keen, interactive, social and ready to absorb information like a sponge. The best toys for 5 year old girls create a culture of activity and an education-conducive environment. Through toys, games and books, girls will grow in knowledge, skill and confidence.

Spooky Stoops- A Halloween Decorating Guide for Every Kind of Mom

Spooky Stoops- A Halloween Decorating Guide for Every Kind of Mom

We might not be following the typical Halloween traditions this year when it comes to corn mazes and door to door trick-or-treating, but that won’t stop us from getting our porch decorating on! Give us all the fall doormats, pumpkins, wreaths, and orange mums. Below you will find some of our favorite ideas for creating the perfect spooky stoop for your house.

1. The Classical Fall Look

How to Recreate This Look:

If you want your porch to scream fall with just little hints of Halloween, this is the perfect look for you! Hang up a pretty wreath and line up as many orange and white pumpkins as you can find.

Bonus; you can remove the Halloween touches and leave this look up through Thanksgiving!

2. The Doormat Centerpiece

How to Recreate This Look:

This layered doormat look has me swooning and the hanging witch hats, obviously, top this look off. Not to mention, the witch feet are such a fun touch.

My 3-year-old constantly tried to figure out how the witch feet ended up in our front yard last year and it was truly hilarious.

3. The Farmhouse Spook

How to Recreate This Look:

Take the classic look with hanging witch hats from above, add in a little bit of a farmhouse touch, and voila! This look has minimal decorations sitting on the ground which is great if you have got a little one who likes to “redecorate”.

My favorite thing about this look is the small pendant banner right on the door and I love that the ferns in galvanized pots could be left up all year.

4. It’s Freakin’ Bats (On the Porch)

How to Recreate This Look:

Anyone else have the “it’s freakin’ bats” video on a constant loop in their head throughout the fall season? I do, and that might just be why this cute and cozy porch look with rocking chairs is my favorite.

5. The Cozy Haunt

How to Recreate This Look:

This is the spookiest look on our list with the tiny makeshift graveyard and creepy crawly spider. However, it definitely isn’t so spooky that you will be scaring the neighbors off which is a plus (maybe!).

Looking for creative ideas to keep Halloween from being hollow this year? We’ve got your back. Here is how we are out boo-ing the pandemic!

By Sarah Mill

Let’s face it, kids have suffered a lot throughout this pandemic. Between a limited summer and the stress of kicking off the new school year in the midst of chaos and ever-changing plans, kids need some extra love this fall.

If you’re a planner like me, you’re already anticipating the worst and scrounging the web for ways to make this Halloween extra special.

Fear not! So much fun is still to be had. So, turn up the volume on that Monster Mash and bring on all the boo-it-yourself fun! It’s time to kick up the energy this Halloween and bring on all the spooktacular magic.

First stop? The decoration station!

It’s Time to Level-up Your Decorations This October.

Think Christmas, but a whole lot spookier. Hit up your local store (or open your Amazon cart) and grab all the orange and black construction paper you can. Help the kids cut out Halloween symbols like witch hats, spiders, ghosts, black cats, and bats. Alternatively, you can use printable templates like this! Try making candy corn garland out of paper plates, a little paint, and some string.

If you’re looking for something a little simpler, make Halloween-colored paper chains to drape around the room. To add a little extra spook, look for black, orange, and purple lights to string around railings and doorways.

Spooky Stoops

Want to take this decorating party outside? Dress up your front door to look like a mummy or jazz up your steps with some jack-o-lanterns.

Consider decorating a tree or two with some lights and cobwebs. That way, everyone in the neighborhood can enjoy your spirit. We have a full article on how to create the perfect spooky stoop, check it out!

Next stop? To the kitchen, we go!

Make Tasty Treats that are Spooky and Scrumptious.

All month long you can serve up savory dishes and sweet treats to help get the kids in the Halloween spirit. Try out-of-the-box dinner ideas like mummified hot dogs, mummy mini pizzas, jack-o-lantern quesadillas, or spaghetti and “eyeballs”.

For something on the sweeter side, try making ghost cupcakes or chocolate covered pretzel pumpkins. Consider putting a ghoulish twist on some Christmas classics. Decorate bat and pumpkin shaped cookies or turn a gingerbread house into a haunted masterpiece.

With a little imagination, the possibilities are endless! Check out these spooky sweets for more inspiration.

Now, let’s get celebrating!

Create New Traditions- 8 Spooktacular Activities for Kids of All Ages!

Boo Basket By BasketsandBoxesShop

1. Booing:

Get the neighborhood (safely) involved with this fun little game of guess who! “Booing” is a great way to spread Halloween fun by anonymously leaving little tricks and treats at your neighbor’s doorstep.

Check out this guide to doing your very own boo!

2. Trunk-or-Treat:

Keep an eye out for local trunk-or-treat events. These are a great way for your kids to dress up and get their candy fix while staying safe and socially distanced, trick or treating from car to car. If you’re worried about safety, have adults (equipped with hand sanitizer) hand out the candy at each car.

Consider organizing your very own trunk-or-treat in your neighborhood! Step up the competition by making it a trunk decorating contest! Need some inspiration for decking out your trunk? Check out these fun ideas!

3. Glow in the Dark Pumpkin Hunt:

Put a spin on an Easter tradition and organize a glow-in-the-dark pumpkin hunt. You can buy small gourds at your local grocery store, craft store, or farm. Let the kids in on the fun, decorating the gourds with glow-in-the-dark paint. Hide them around the yard (or neighborhood) and have a nighttime search party!

You can keep the designs simply spooky or go all-out creative. To add a little extra fun, you can have different prizes or candy rewards for each pumpkin they find.

4. Halloween Pinata:

There’s no doubt that kids look forward to their candy fix each October. If your town is forgoing trick-or-treating, buy (or make) a Halloween-themed pinata and fill it with your kid’s favorite candy. You know you’ll want to toss in a few varieties you love too.

5. Virtual Costume Party:

As a kid, one of the best parts about Halloween is showing off your costume to your friends. If they can’t be together this year,  consider hosting a virtual costume party. Turn up the spooky soundtrack and have a dance party. Better yet, make a guessing game out of it. See if the kids can guess who is who behind the masks and face paint.

Check out some great costumes under $20 here!

6. Movie Marathon:

Grab the monster munch and turn off the lights! Pick a night (or several) to watch some of your family’s favorite spooky stories play out on the screen. From Hocus Pocus to It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, there are plenty of Halloween movies appropriate for every age. Check out this movie cheat sheet, categorizing Halloween movies by age.

Looking to bring it to the next level? Grab a projector and some good speakers to create a backyard “drive-in”! If your yard is big enough, feel free to invite some of your kid’s friends over to safely enjoy the show. If you have any connections in town, see if the school or local library is willing to host a movie night in their parking lot for anyone to enjoy.

Our Favorite Halloween Movies for the Family

  • It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
  • Monsters, Inc.
  •  Hotel Transylvania
  • Nightmare Before Christmas
  • Hocus Pocus

7. Spooky Science:

This is a perfect way to weave a little Halloween fun into remote learning. Get creative with the classic vinegar and baking soda volcano and try the experiment inside a pumpkin. Mix the same ingredients in a water bottle to inflate a balloon ghost. Slime is another great experiment and there are plenty of DIY slime recipes out there. Spookify your slime by adding some food coloring, Halloween confetti, or (plastic) creepy critters.

8. Face Mask Decoration:

Why keep the fun contained at home? This is a great activity to do in the weeks before Halloween so your kids can spread Halloween joy wherever they go. Alternatively, you can buy one of these Halloween themed masks to help get spooky!

With the growing presence of masks in our lives, this is an opportunity for your kids to stay safe while showcasing their spirit.

How will you celebrate this year?

If you or your kids are anything like me when it comes to tradition, all the changes brought on by this pandemic have been a tough adjustment. After taking a  deep breath, I saw an opportunity in this madness. For most, traditions provide a sense of comfort and joy. Look at this as an opportunity to teach your kids (and remind yourself) the power of resilience, showing them how change can lead to new traditions that can be just as fun, if not more so.

Who knows? The kids might have such a blast, they’ll be begging you to make these activities a regular part of your annual spooky season celebration.
